Prof. Ashley van Niekerk
Ashley van Niekerk is a Specialist Scientist/Manager with the Safety and Peace Promotion Research Unit and a Professor Extraordinarius with the University of South Africa’s Institute for Social and Health Sciences. He has a PhD in Social Medicine from the Karolinska Institutet, and an M.Psych (Clinical Psychology) from the University of the Western Cape. He is a member of the National Health Research Committee and is the Editor-in-Chief of African Safety Promotion: A Journal of Injury and Violence Prevention. He has consulted to the National Department of Health on an Integrated Strategic Framework for the Prevention of Violence and Injury in South Africa. He was also on the Burns and Scalds WHO Expert Group for the World Report on Child and Adolescent Injury Prevention in 2007-2009 and is a long-standing board member of the Child Accident Prevention Foundation of Southern Africa. His recent research interests include the identification of childhood injury risk profiles, in particular those due to burns, the development and evaluation of childhood safety interventions, and the development of safety policy for South Africa.
